As the coastal Georgia air warms and century-old live oaks burst with new growth, The Ford Field & River Club awakens to one of its most magical seasons. Spring at The Ford brings a renewed energy to our storied sanctuary, where the Ogeechee River flows with promise and our diverse landscapes beckon with adventure, inviting our members outdoors.
We’ve gathered the most anticipated springtime activities that members are marking on their calendars. From signature sporting events to naturalist adventures that connect us to the land Clara and Henry Ford so treasured, these experiences embody the best of Lowcountry living.
Sheepshead Madness Tournament
In February, spawning sheepshead migrate to Georgia’s nearshore reefs, setting the stage for The Ford’s annual Sheepshead Madness Tournament. This beloved team competition challenges anglers to weigh in their three heaviest fish, with the highest aggregate weight determining the winner. These distinctive black and white striped fish put up a remarkable fight on light tackle and are excellent table fare—a true delicacy of the coastal waters.

Rookery Kayak on Lake Clara
Members experience The Ford’s diverse wildlife habitats from a uniquely serene perspective with naturalist-led kayak tours of Lake Clara. These tranquil morning expeditions offer an intimate view of the seasonal wading bird rookery, where graceful herons and majestic egrets build their spring nests amidst the cypress trees. The normally quiet cypress stands become bustling bird neighborhoods, filled with the sounds of courtship and nesting activity. Members bring binoculars or cameras to capture these remarkable creatures in their natural habitat, forming deeper connections to the delicate ecosystems found at The Ford.
2025 Club Championship Golf Tournament
The annual Club Championship returns to Pete Dye’s “finest Southern design” this March. This prestigious two-day stroke play event will crown The Ford’s 2025 Club Champion, with competition taking place on the award-winning 250-acre championship course—where members enjoy the freedom of no tee times. From serious competitors to those simply enjoying the camaraderie, this event brings together members across generations to celebrate a shared passion for the game. Following Saturday’s final round, members gather at the Clubhouse for the awards ceremony and dinner, with panoramic views of the Ogeechee River providing the perfect backdrop.

Spring Couples Nine & Dine
The popular Nine & Dine returns this spring with a mixed four-person team, 9-hole scramble event. This relaxed format welcomes golfers of all skill levels to experience the community spirit that defines The Ford’s sporting tradition. Beginning with a shotgun start, the golden late-afternoon light illuminates century-old oak allées as players complete their rounds. Afterward, members gather at the Clubhouse for a chef-crafted dinner and awards celebration. The Nine & Dine perfectly captures The Ford’s approach to sport—challenging yet welcoming, competitive yet convivial.
Junior Naturalist Program: Environmental Monitoring
The Ford’s youngest members develop their connection to the storied land through the quarterly Junior Naturalist Program. April’s session focuses on environmental and wildlife monitoring, teaching children ages 9 and up about the importance of conservation and stewardship. This program provides hands-on experience with game cameras, radio tracking, citizen science reporting and water quality monitoring. After completing the course, Junior Naturalists can volunteer to assist with ongoing Ford monitoring projects like the bluebird initiative and NestWatch program.

Sunset Kayaking
As daylight extends into the evening, The Ford offers members one of spring’s most magical experiences—sunset kayaking through the tranquil waters of Lake Clara. This photographer’s dream excursion captures the golden hour light as it plays across the rippling water and illuminates the Spanish moss hanging from ancient oaks.
Spring at The Ford Field & River Club offers countless ways for members to embrace an uncommon way of life, from sporting pursuits to naturalist adventures. Whether casting a line from the Deepwater Marina, teeing off on the championship golf course or exploring diverse ecosystems, this season allows members of all generations to create lasting memories together.
