Where Peace of Mind Lives: The Art of Seasonal Living at The Ford

Published on

Like the waters of the serene Ogeechee, Lowcountry life ebbs and flows along with the rhythms of nature. For many of our members, winters are best spent at The Ford, with its soft light, mild air, and unhurried days along the Ogeechee River. But the change of seasons leads them to adventures elsewhere, whether north to cooler climates, across the Atlantic, or off to other beloved clubs and destinations.
Though it may be bittersweet to depart, our members often speak of the quiet assurance they feel in knowing that their home, and their inimitable Lowcountry lifestyle will remain secure and perfectly preserved, awaiting their return.

Freedom You Can Feel

There is a definitive luxury that resides in knowing you can simply close the door behind you and go – without second-guessing or grappling with lingering worries. At The Ford, that peace of mind becomes an added amenity that defines our way of life. It’s not merely security, it’s freedom.

That freedom equates to peace of mind. It provides the confidence to come and go at will, secure in the knowledge that everything will remain just as you left it. It’s the comfort of knowing that this club and the family-like community here will see to things while you’re away, and welcome you joyfully when you return.

A Setting Designed for Ease

This sense of effortlessness owes much to the setting itself. The peaceful serenity of the natural Lowcountry landscape creates a relaxed, comfortable, and unhurried environment, a haven from everyday anxiety.

As a private, gated community, The Ford offers a level of discretion and security that feels both comprehensive and unobtrusive. There are no grand displays, no unnecessary interruptions. There is only the steady, reassuring presence of a team dedicated to maintaining the integrity of each home and the community as a whole.

Homes are cared for with precision. Grounds remain immaculate. Every detail, from routine upkeep to the smallest finishing touches, is quietly managed. It is a standard of care that allows members to step away without hesitation, knowing that nothing is left to chance.

The Quiet Strength of Community

What truly distinguishes The Ford, however, is something less visible and far more meaningful: its people.

Here, neighbors become trusted friends. Over time, relationships deepen into something genuine and lasting. There is an unspoken understanding among members, a shared sense of stewardship that extends beyond individual homes. When someone is away, others take notice. They are like family. They check in. They keep an eye out. They care.

It is not uncommon for a member to return after months away to find that a neighbor has checked in on the property to ensure everything remained just as it should be. Perhaps they swept the porch, put a light on, or left a simple note welcoming them home. These gestures are never expected, yet eternally appreciated. They reflect a culture where friendship is not incidental, but foundational and meaningful.

Effortless Departures, Seamless Returns

For those who live seasonally, this environment creates a rare and invaluable freedom. There is no need for complicated arrangements or lingering concerns about what might happen in your absence. Instead, members can leave with clarity and calm, supported by both the attentive staff and the quiet watchfulness of their community.

And when they return, they return not just to a home, but to a life already in motion.

There are familiar faces waiting at the clubhouse. Friends ready for a round of golf, a walk along the river, or an impromptu lunch that turns into an afternoon well spent. Conversations pick up where they left off. The transition is seamless, as though no time has passed at all.

A Life that Moves with You

In a world where flexibility is increasingly valued, The Ford offers a version of ownership that feels remarkably light. It removes the friction often associated with maintaining multiple homes and replaces it with something far more enjoyable: the ability to move freely, without sacrificing connection or peace of mind.

“Lock and leave” here is not simply about security, it is about trust and faith. Trust in the people who surround you, in the systems that support you, and faith in the enduring spirit of a community that remains constant whether you are present or away.

At The Ford, you are free to follow wherever life leads. To go out, explore, live and enjoy. Rest assured that your blissfully timeless lifestyle will remain here at The Ford, waiting to welcome you back home.

EXPERIENCE THE FORD

Despite its world-class golf course and Platinum club status, The Ford is decidedly not a country club. Members will be quick to tell you that it’s a sporting club, and more than that, it’s a community of owners who treasure its natural beauty and tranquility.

Ford and the Land

Published on

Henry Ford’s motives in establishing a stronghold in the South were rooted not only in finding a beautiful place to live but also taking advantage of the ideal climate, biodiversity and its potential as an agricultural anchor to support his many business ventures. What started as a drive to grow goldenrod for rubber production eventually gave way to turning the land once used for the area’s thriving rice fields into space for growing iceberg lettuce. It was shared that “Ford firmly believed that a back-to-the-farm movement would precede a new era of prosperity in the United States” and The Savannah Morning News once published an article stating “[Ford] believes any lasting general prosperity is closely allied with the prosperity of the soil…”

Ford’s passion for utilizing the gifts of the land extended not only to his cash crops, but to things that created an oasis out of the vast marshland upon which he’d settled. This ideal was represented by flowering gardens and manicured greenspaces boasting camellias, azaleas, dogwoods, and magnolias, turning a 55-acre section of the vast property into a colorful, sweetly scented slice of home. Despite large swaths of the untamed land serving as the home to wild hogs, deer and turkeys, hunting was forbidden on property, and Ford kept birdhouses in strategic locations, continually promoting the idea of living harmoniously with the wildlife (even if they did infiltrate his gardens).

Commitment on the Course

In 2020, The Ford’s Golf Course was designated as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary and is one of fewer than 1,000 courses in the world to hold this certification from Audubon International. To achieve this honor, five environmental quality areas are evaluated on several different criteria –

  • Actively creating and protecting local wildlife and natural habitats on the property.
  • Water Conservation
  • Water Quality Management
  • Chemical Use Reduction and Best Practices for Safety
  • Outreach and education, both within the club and with partnering organizations

A key part of the certification is also geared toward preserving the natural heritage of the game of golf, which blends in seamlessly at the club, as the course design is shaped by coastline, meadows and freshwater lakes, taking distinct forms in the parkland-style front nine and a links-style back nine. Through these mindful practices related to the caretaking of the course greens, fostering habitats for local wildlife and native plants, and ongoing environmental testing, the award-winning Pete Dye course remains notable not only for incredible playing conditions, but its larger impact on The Ford’s ecosystem as a whole.

On a Mission for Good

While Ford’s ice house no longer aids in the transportation of leafy greens and his land isn’t being used for experimental crops, The Ford Field & River Club continues his legacy of embracing the flora and fauna that also call The Ford home. Through a partnership with Audubon International, hallmark amenities on property – including the Pete Dye-designed golf course, deep water marina, and naturalist program – are working toward maintaining  Cooperative Sanctuary Program certification that reflect the club’s deeper commitment to using best practices for stewardship of our natural resources, our wildlife, and the environment.

For the Land and Sea

The mission to improve and maintain The Ford’s natural resources goes beyond the work on land. In 2025, the club’s marina earned the Georgia Clean Marina certification, praising the Outdoor Pursuits Team’s efforts in environmental stewardship. Combining responsible business practices related to fueling operations, boat washing policies, and stormwater runoff management with top-notch member service showcases the team’s strengths as responsible keepers of the coast.

The Mission for More

What started with a focus on the sustainability for the golf course has since stoked the desire to do good across multiple facets and facilities of the property. Today, we are working on a larger scale strategy to earn Audubon Sustainable Communities Program certification, combining not only the efforts of the Ford Grounds + Maintenance team, but also the Naturalist, Outdoor Pursuits, Food & Beverage teams and, of course, our Members.

With programming in place for community education around our resident alligators, the establishment of bird boxes and pollinator gardens, native plant sales and cleanup efforts, we’re embracing the natural assets and working to encourage a healthy ecosystem within the gates. Materials in our dining venues are being swapped for paper and compostable items and homeowners are encouraged to make eco-friendly swaps within their homes. As we seek the next official Audubon certification, these interconnected steps show The Ford is on its way to setting an example not only for the local community, but for other private clubs around the country.

Camaraderie Over Competition

Published on

The Round That Starts It All

Often, it begins on the course.

Whether it’s a competitive match with something on the line or a relaxed round filled with playful banter, golf at The Ford has a way of setting the tone for the day. The walk down the fairway offers uninterrupted time to catch up. Conversations stretch between shots. Friendly rivalries form and evolve year after year.

But the game is only part of it. It’s the shared experience that lingers. The moment when someone drains a long putt and the group erupts. The quiet appreciation of a perfectly struck iron against a backdrop of Lowcountry beauty. That post-round moment of shared congratulations that marks not just the end of play, but the start of the story waiting to be to told.

And if the weather turns or the schedule tightens, the new golf simulator will keep the momentum going. A quick nine at St. Andrews. A closest-to-the-pin challenge before lunch. A way to sharpen skills or settle a score, all without ever leaving the clubhouse.

From Fairway to River, Field, and Sky

The beauty of a day at The Ford is that it never has to end when the final putt drops.
Just beyond the greens flows the scenic Ogeechee River, a winding, tidal waterway that invites exploration. From our marina, it’s easy for members to venture out with friends on an afternoon cruise, casting lines in quiet coves or simply taking in the Lowcountry beauty as the sun lowers over the marsh. The river has a way of slowing time, and turning conversation into reflection.

For those who prefer the rhythm of sport, sporting clays and upland wing shooting offer a different kind of focus. There’s camaraderie in the field in both the shared anticipation before the call and the congratulatory nod after a clean shot. It’s tradition, recreation, and skill woven together.

And then there are the moments in between: a quick pickleball match before dinner, a spontaneous challenge on the court, or an impromptu gathering that stretches longer than planned because no one is ready to call it a day.

The Ford isn’t a single-activity destination. It’s an environment designed for movement-for shifting seamlessly from one pursuit to the next, all while surrounded by good friends.

The Clubhouse: Where Stories Take Shape

Eventually, the day finds its way back to the clubhouse.

Scorecards reappear. The “remember when” stories begin. Lunch turns into cocktails. Cocktails turn into dinner plans. Someone suggests cards. Someone else orders another round.

The atmosphere is relaxed but refined, an easy balance of Southern hospitality and understated elegance. It’s a place where friendships feel at home. Where introductions quickly become invitations. Where parents bring their children, and years later, those children return with friends of their own.

This is where tradition quietly takes root.

Beyond Recreation: Rituals of Friendship

What makes the days at The Ford memorable isn’t any single activity. It’s the rhythm of them together. The way one experience flows into another like a symphony of recreation. It is universally understood that there’s no rush. You can forever delight in the shared sense that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

Members’ pride in the unique lifestyle at The Ford is evident in their desire to host friends to join in these daily rituals of play and exploration.

Over time, these visits become chapters in a larger story. The annual fall trip. The spring fishing weekend. The friendly tournament that grows a little more competitive each year.
Traditions like these don’t announce themselves. They simply happen, repeated until they feel essential.

And perhaps that’s the quiet magic of The Ford.

The Days that Stay With You

Long after the irons are cleaned and the boat is docked, the memory of the day remains. Not because of the score. Not because of the schedule. But because of the people.

The Ford has a way of elevating ordinary time into something timeless, and enduring. A simple round becomes a story retold for years. A casual afternoon spent fishing or playing cards becomes a cornerstone of friendship. A weekend visit becomes a standing date on the calendar.

Membership at The Ford offers incredible access to a tremendous world of sport, nature, and history. But more than anything, it’s about access to one another.

It’s about the moments you share. The traditions you build. The friendships that grow stronger with every visit, tempered by the indelible memories of experiences shared.

Season of Change: Renovations at The Ford

Published on

For many, the new year signals the beginning of a season of change. For The Ford, that season of change hasn’t come without years of careful planning and thoughtful decision making. In 2026, those plans will come to life in significant ways for the present and future of the club as Ford will complete the largest renovation project of any member-owned private club community in the Lowcountry.
Jeff Dekruif, General Manager & Chief Operating Officer of The Ford, shares insight into what’s on the horizon for the club and how we got here.

Sports Barn Reopening

The most forthcoming change our members will see is the reopening of our Sports Barn following an 8-month-long renovation.

For many years, we heard the feedback that our members’ wellness routines were evolving and they were seeking new offerings at the club. Not only will the renovation bring us a beautiful new space, which includes new fitness studios, locker rooms, and advanced equipment, but will also expand our capabilities to introduce new group fitness classes, recovery services and access to numerous modern wellness machines and technologies.

Our team is really excited to take full advantage of this incredible new resource and be woven into the daily fitness routine of our members.

A Boldly Enhanced Clubhouse

If you’ve visited the property any time since mid-November, you know that the most significant change happening for us this year is the complete renovation of our Clubhouse.

We are in the midst of bringing that building into a new era – we’ll see new golf amenities, state-of-the-art food and beverage facilities, revitalized gathering spaces and a new place for members to generally spend quality time with each other. Right now, we’re seeing the skeleton of it coming to life and of course, it’s changing how we do a lot of things, including mealtimes, large events and executing member services at other locations on property.

We all know the end goal is going to make the temporary disruption and dust very worth it.

Years of Planning

Doing something like this  does not come as the result of an overnight decision.

This planning began 5 years ago, with surveys, questionnaires, member focus groups and lots of research fueling our choices. Our members have been incredibly supportive of these changes, understanding there might be a few bumps in the road along the way.

Committees were formed to fine tune operational needs, we’ve discussed timelines in depth, and our staff have worked together to ensure their service to members continues to maintain our incredibly high standards.

Keeping the Process Transparent

As a club, transparency and open, frequent conversations have been vital to member trust and communication throughout the construction journey. Making sure we consider the “now” needs and wishes of our members must be balanced with what the future of The Ford will look like.

It’s a delicate process, and we’re confident that all this change is truly the best to maintain the integrity of the club while allowing it to reach new milestones.

A New Era Begins

With the completion of these new amenities, 2026 marks a new era for The Ford.

Along this path of improvement, leadership and members both have worked together to nurture the club’s growth while still staying true to its mission and heritage.

While we wait to see our beautiful new Clubhouse come to life, we look forward to getting creative while serving our members, embracing the change and looking forward to what’s to come for the future of The Ford.

Your Guide to a Perfect Summer Day at The Ford

Published on

At The Ford Field & River Club, summer days stretch out with a sense of ease—unhurried, open-ended and full of possibility. From teeing off on the Pete Dye-designed course to boating along the Ogeechee River, to time on the courts and gatherings at the Clubhouse, this is what a perfect summer day at The Ford looks like—and why so many choose to make it their home.

Morning: Golf, Coffee and Golfer’s Corner

Start the day with a peaceful walk or bike ride beneath the moss-draped oaks. Then ease into a round on our award-winning Pete Dye golf course—no tee times required.

And, if you’re playing Tuesday through Sunday, be sure to stop by the new Golfer’s Corner, located upstairs in the Clubhouse. It’s stocked with grab-and-go casual favorites like hot dogs and Bavarian pretzels to keep members fueled through the back nine.

Pickleball + Lunch

After golf, swap your spikes for sneakers and head to the pickleball courts. Whether you’re just learning or already advanced, join one of the weekday Pickleball Clinics and come back on the weekend for open play. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, swing by the Clubhouse for lunch. The Clubhouse is serving fresh seasonal fare, perfect to enjoy either at the Club or wherever the day takes you—on your porch, down by the dock, or in the shade near the courts.

Afternoon: Spa Appointments, Trail Rides or Time on the River

As the sun reaches its peak, slow the pace. Book an afternoon appointment at The Spa for a massage, skin treatment, manicure or body treatment—members say it’s one of the most peaceful places on property, especially in the quiet hours between lunch and dinner.

Not in the mood for a service? Settle in at The Main House instead. The rocking chairs, coastal breeze and a cold drink in hand make for an unbeatable combination. On select afternoons, members enjoy seasonal programming, like the Summer Book Club, Trivia Night or Bingo Night. Or, if you’re looking to stretch your legs a bit more, this is a perfect time to explore The Ford’s miles of scenic trails on horseback with a guided ride from the Equestrian Center.

For water lovers, join a naturalist-led Sunset Moonrise Kayak adventure or try your hand at fishing at The Ford. Our ODP captains offer a guided intro before you cast off across the property using techniques you’ve just learned.

Evening: Cookies, Cocktails & Connection

As golden hour rolls in, head back to The Main House for one of our most cherished member traditions: Cookies and Cocktails with fellow friends and neighbors.

Then make your way to the Clubhouse for dinner with family or friends—indoors for something more intimate, or out on the terrace overlooking the back nine. With good company and a familiar setting, it’s the kind of evening that feels distinctly like summer at The Ford.

Nightcap: Movies & Moonlight Soaks

End the night with a relaxing soak underneath the stars in the Lake Dye hot tub, just a short walk or golf cart ride from the Clubhouse. Or, bring a chair and join your neighbors for live entertainment at the Lake Dye Pool.

Every day at The Ford invites members to embrace what matters most: time outdoors, meaningful connections, and the space to both explore and recharge.

The Ford’s Pete Dye Championship Golf Course
Plays Host to the 72nd Georgia Open

Published on

The Ford Field & River Club played host to the 72nd Golf Pro Payments Georgia Open this past weekend, August 3-6, making this the sixth time the storied tournament has graced the fairways of our Pete Dye Championship Golf Course.

Organized by the Georgia PGA, the four-day event showcased 144 professionals and promising amateurs, set against the picturesque backdrop of our Lowcountry coastal setting. This championship holds a unique distinction as the sole 72-hole, four-day event among all Georgia PGA events, punctuated by a captivating cut after the initial 36 holes of competition.

As the fog cleared after a brief delay on Friday morning, the stage was set for a fun, competitive weekend. Mini-tour professional Kam Williams overtook third-round leader Greg Edwards with well-timed birdies. The competition narrowed to Williams and Edwards on Sunday during the final round, with Williams securing a two-shot victory, thanks to a stellar finish on the last two holes. In front of a supportive crowd, Williams clinched the championship with a score of 17-under par 271, securing the $9,000 prize for first place.

“The Ford has a special place in my heart since I got to play there for the first time years ago in the Georgia Open,” shared Williams. “I always tell people how perfect The Ford’s course is with its impeccably maintained greens and inviting yet challenging fairways. Over the four years I’ve competed, I’ve only had great experiences there, and the staff and members are always so welcoming. I want to say thank you again to everyone who supported us this week and for inviting us to your special community.”

Aidan Kramer claimed the low amateur title, finishing in third place at 10-under par 278, followed by Brett Barron and Harry Jones at 9-under par 279.

The Ford’s celebrated course, hailed by Pete Dye as one of his finest Southern designs, combines parkland-style and links-style elements. Meticulously crafted, it offers a rewarding golf experience, showcasing Lowcountry beauty with bunkers, greens and hazards that challenge all skill levels.

The 72nd Golf Pro Payments Georgia Open came to a triumphant close, leaving behind a legacy of competitive spirit, camaraderie and unforgettable moments on the fairways of The Ford.

Top 5 Summer Activities at The Ford

Published on

With summer officially here, activities are heating up at The Ford Field & River Club. Whether you’re looking forward to venturing out each day to embrace the warm weather or you’re more inclined to spend the sunny quiet afternoons strolling under the shady oaks or kicking back on the porch while the kids run free—The Ford is where everyone can have their perfect summer.

Below, Mike Womble, Director of Outdoor Pursuits at The Ford, shares some of our members’ favorite ways to stay cool (or embrace the heat) and create summer memories that will last a lifetime.

Pool Days

Solo or with family and friends, days at the Lake Dye Pool are not to be missed. “With kids out of school and adults wanting to take a cooling plunge, we have lots of excitement happening in and near the pool,” says Mike. Plus, the adjacent Lake Dye Grill is open for the season—serving fresh burgers, icy cocktails and more to enjoy poolside.

Summer Camps

In the summer months, The Ford’s staff naturalist Brittany Dodge hosts two-week-long Kids Summer Camps. “During each session, 15 to 20 kids enjoy the pool, learn about nature, make nature-themed crafts, try their hand at golf, create (and eat) fun treats with The Ford’s on-site chef, go fishing and just have a blast being a kid,” says Mike. As for parents—they’ll get days to themselves, followed by tired-out (and happy) kids in the evenings.

Evenings by the Campfire

No summer at The Ford is complete without at least a few evenings under the stars. Head to The Main House and watch the sunset by the pool, fire up s’mores at the Oyster House’s outdoor fire pit, or opt to get a table at the Clubhouse and take in the evening—and the golf course greens—alongside a great meal. Wherever you go, keep your eyes peeled for flickering lightning bugs and listen to the crickets sing—this is what summer dreams are made of.

Crabbing

“All summer long, crabbing for Georgia Blue Crabs is in full swing at the flood gates along Lake Clara,” says Mike. “Huge 6- to 9-inch crabs can be caught at these ‘pinch points’ along the Lake Clara Dike Trail. You can throw out a trap and wait, but the most fun is to take crab lines with chicken necks tied to them and lure the crabs to the surface to net them. Expect hours of fun for the kids and the kids-at-heart in your family.”

Horseback Riding

Exploring The Ford from about five feet off the ground is a spectacular way to enjoy both nature and adventure any time of the year—and summer is no exception. The Ford houses more than 10 miles of bridle trails—explore them on your own horse, borrow one of ours or set out on a guided tour. Make sure to cool off in the Equestrian Center’s comfy members’ lounge after a leisurely ride through the lowcountry.

4 Fish to Angle for this Summer

Published on

“Summer is a great time to be a fisherman here at The Ford Field & River Club,” says Mike Womble, Director of Outdoor Pursuits at The Ford and a trusted resource on all things angling. “Some of the most sought-after game fish show up in large numbers when the water gets warm around here. Whether you are a fly fisherman or use conventional tackle, you won’t be disappointed with what our waterways have to offer.”  Discover four of the fish species you’ll likely hook this season at or near The Ford.

Sea Trout & Redfish

“Just a short boat ride from The Ford is Ossabaw Sound, which offers the angler numerous fishing opportunities,” says Mike. “Spotted sea trout and redfish are schooling around nearly any small creek mouth or oyster shell bar in the sound—and while live shrimp is the go-to bait to catch these scrappy fighters, they will also greedily take shrimp or crab pattern flies.”

Triple Tail

As June arrives, so does the Triple Tail. “A fly fishers dream—these fish have the habit of floating on their side and can be sight-casted to by the fly angler,” notes Mike. “They will also take many different artificial and live baits for the conventional angler. The average size of these little monsters is 5-20 pounds. The great thing about Triple Tails is that they are amazing table fare. Let your Ford guide filet your catch and take it up to our chef at the Clubhouse for an amazingly fresh and tasty meal—prepared to your liking.”

Tarpon

“Late June brings the king of all game fish to our coastal waters—including the Tarpon. These giants migrate here and stay around till late September,” says Mike. “Usually caught on live bait like mullet or menhaden, these fish range in size from 50-150+ pounds and will test any angler lucky enough to hook one. Once hooked, these fish make incredibly acrobatic jumps—sometimes reaching 10 feet in the air!  They are the holy grail of sport fishing, for sure. We typically take a picture and release them to fight another day.”

Largemouth Bass

“If you would like to stay on property, the Ford offers almost 300 acres of freshwater lakes and ponds to delight the Largemouth Bass angler,” says Mike. “Summer is the best time to catch these fish using topwater lures and flies. During early mornings and late evenings, these tough fish will greedily take a frog pattern, lure or a wounded baitfish lure from the surface and show off when hooked with some amazing acrobatic moves. The average size Largemouth Bass caught at The Ford is between 2-6 pounds, with a few bruisers in the 7-10 pound class caught every summer.”

GOLF Magazine Names The Ford Field & River Club One of Georgia’s Best Golf Courses

Published on

Pete Dye’s Richmond Hill golf course ranked in the company of Augusta National

In a year when a day of golf has been one of the few safe respites from quarantine, The Ford Field & River Club, home to the golf course Pete Dye proudly proclaimed to be his “finest Southern links,” has been named one of GOLF Magazine’s top courses in Georgia in its 2020 – 2021 bi-annual rankings. Of 416 courses in Georgia, The Ford Field & River Club was ranked the 15th  best course in the state, alongside prestigious companies including the world-famous Augusta National.

Accolades for golfing at The Ford Field & River Club

In 2014, The Ford Field & River Club Golf Course underwent a $7.5 million renovation with Pete Dye’s direct involvement and has since received numerous accolades and continuous high praise from renowned golf publications and club associations, including the following:

  • “Best Modern Courses (1960–present),” Golfweek
  • “Best Golf Courses in Georgia,” Golf Digest
  • “Top 100 Residential Courses,” Golfweek
  • The Host of the Georgia PGA Open
  • Golfweek’s Best 2021: Top 200 Residential Golf Courses in the U.S.

Additionally, The Ford Field & River Club received certification in Environmental Planning from the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses (ACSP). This international program is administered by Audubon International and is designed to help landowners preserve and enhance the environmental quality of their property.

How GOLF ranks the best courses in America

According to GOLF, the ranking process is as follows: For the newly released 2020-21 U.S. list, panelists were provided a list of 489 courses across the country. Next to that list of courses were 11 “buckets,” or groupings. If panelists considered a course to be among the top three in the country, they ticked that box. If they believed the course to be among Nos. 4-10 in the U.S., they checked that box, followed by 11-25, 26-50, and so on. Panelists were also free to write in courses that they felt should have been included on the ballot (fewer than a handful of such additions in the U.S. vote).

Points were assigned to each bucket to arrive at an average score for each course. Then, each course’s aggregate score was divided by the number of votes. From those point tallies, the courses were then ranked accordingly. The process is an intentionally simple and straightforward one. Why? Because it invariably produces results that are widely lauded. Like the game itself, GOLF believes there’s no need to unnecessarily overcomplicate things.

What makes The Ford Field & River Club Golf Course so special?

The Ford Field & River Club Golf Course is well-known for Pete Dye’s signature long, scenic views and flexible play for golfers of all levels. The course was built with member play in mind, making it a joy to play for average and experienced golfers alike. Ladies will appreciate the attention given to the placement of the women’s tees, which typically eliminate the need to carry water or larger hazards. This, too, is often the case with Pete Dye courses, as Mrs. Dye was herself an avid golfer and greatly influenced the way Mr. Dye’s designs played for female players. And best of all, Ford members never need a tee time to hit the links.

This is not to say that The Ford Field & River Club Golf Course is without its challenges. On the contrary, each hole sports seven sets of tees: Black, Gold, Blue, Modified, White, Red, and even Family Tees which can make the course play anywhere from 7,443 yards from the Black to 5,002 yards from the Reds. The placement of each tee box adds both distance and difficulty to each hole, often bringing additional hazards into play.

GOLF is the definitive voice of the sport on and off the course, dedicated to enhancing every golfer’s enjoyment of the game – making this award a true honor for The Ford Field & River Club.

Uncommon Living Redefined

What is Uncommon Living?

Life at The Ford Field & River Club is far from ordinary. It is not only the world-class staff, exceptional beauty of the Georgia Lowcountry, top-rated golf course, immaculate real estate, and unrivaled quality of amenities that make our community so special – but the familiar faces and places of The Ford Field & River Club that make life here so unique.

Our majestic waterfront location once captivated automobile magnate Henry Ford’s imagination, so much so that he built a historic winter retreat on this lush property in the 1930s. Today, the property is one of the nation’s leading luxury communities and private sporting clubs, featuring 400 home sites nestled on 1,800 breathtaking acres. In fact, Town & Country magazine has named The Ford Field & River Club one of the top seven safe havens in the country, recognizing enclaves that offer an outstanding quality of life and exceptional amenities.

Uncommon Amenities

Speaking of amenities, this private sporting community features a challenging Pete Dye golf course, on-site day spa, deepwater marina, world-class equestrian center, state-of-the-art fitness center, shooting preserve, swimming pools, and more than 10 miles of scenic horse, biking, and hiking trails.

The property’s one-of-a-kind homes range from cozy two-bedroom cottages to five-bedroom estate homes, many of which were designed by renowned architects. Each lot and home is unique and convenient to club amenities – many within walking or biking distance for a relaxing lifestyle in the temperate Southern climate.

Uncommon Lowcountry Lifestyle

The Ford Field & River Club’s intimate setting in Georgia’s lush Lowcountry provides the kind of coastal living most people only dream of. This breathtaking community is a sportsman’s paradise and outdoor enthusiast’s dream, where memories are made on land, at sea, and right in your backyard. As much a premier sporting club as it is a private residential community, The Ford Field & River Club is located on the Ogeechee River banks, with the Atlantic Ocean a mere 20 miles away.

A private marina affords members convenient access to inshore and offshore fishing opportunities. Guided fishing trips can be easily arranged through the staff guides at Ogeechee Outfitters, the on-property source for fishing boating supplies, as well as a number of popular outdoor apparel brands.

Our diverse calendar of events immerses members in the laid-back Southern lifestyle for the social butterfly that makes our community so unique – creating a sense of community where neighbors are friends and friends are family.

Uncommon Accolades

At The Ford Field & River Club, we’re no stranger to accolades. The Platinum Clubs of America award ranks The Ford Field & River Club among the top five percent of all clubs in the United States and the top 150 clubs. The Distinguished Club Elite award, another feather in The Ford Field & River Club’s cap, is the only merit-based award program that recognizes private clubs and their management for outstanding delivery of exceptional member experience. Both awards recognize the world-class experience members enjoy every day.

Creating the Platinum Clubs of America experience goes far beyond excellence in amenities and the property’s beauty. Achieving this milestone is the result of an intensive planning process and the execution of a long-range strategy by The Ford Field & River Club management staff and board of directors to recruit world-class talent, invest in infrastructure, increase conservation efforts, adapt to changing times, and take the steps necessary to ensure the legacy of the property for future members.

As defined by Distinguished Clubs, “member experience” is that special combination of qualities that a private club provides its members. It is not just the quality of service, the facilities, or the product provided; it is also the staff’s quality and the management and the overall club governance they deliver.

“These awards reinforce what we already know: Ford enriches the lives of members and their families by fostering enduring friendships and providing a competitively superior variety of first-class amenities,” said Club Board President Jeff Fusile. “These awards are a wonderful validation and much-deserved recognition of everyone’s efforts.”

Uncommon Golf

Included in The Ford Field & River Club‘s member experience is Pete Dye’s signature golf course, which he proclaimed to be his “finest Southern links.” In 2014, The Ford Field & River Club Golf Course underwent a $7.5 million renovation with Pete Dye’s direct involvement and had since received numerous accolades and continuous high praise from renowned golf publications, including Golf Digest “Best Golf Courses in Georgia,” Golfweek’s “Top 100 Best Residential Courses,” and Host for the Georgia PGA Open.

This year, Ford was named one of GOLF Magazine’s top courses in Georgia in its 2020 – 2021 rankings. Of 416 courses in Georgia, The Ford Field & River Club was ranked the 15th best course in the state, alongside such prestigious company as the world-famous Augusta National. Make 2021 healthy and happy with The Ford 100

Make 2021 healthy and happy with The Ford 100

Each New Year at The Ford Field & River Club, we have a tradition to motivate and inspire our members to stay healthy – and this year, it is more important than ever. Spending time outdoors, enjoying nature, and doing something active are all proven methods to reduce stress, improve mental health, immunity, and sleep, lower blood pressure and increase life satisfaction – in other words, keep you healthy and happy.

To kick the year off right, we’re dedicating the first 100 days of the year to improving your health and fitness with The Ford 100. Starting New Year’s Day 2021, Ford members are encouraged to complete at least 100 miles of walking, biking, swimming, and/or running in the first 100 days of the year. And, we’ve got nutrition covered, too!

A message from Fitness Director John Lindsey: Eating well comes naturally with the Whole30 diet.

For January, I am challenging those participating in The Ford 100 to complete the Whole30 diet program. I finished the diet last year and loved the way I felt. For those who are not familiar, the diet’s premise is to eliminate foods that people are commonly intolerant to and/or foods that tend to affect human performance negatively. After the 30 days, you slowly put the restricted things back into your diet to see how it’s affected. If you are looking to lose weight, sleep better, feel sharper cognitively, and have sustained energy throughout the day, I highly recommend joining me! You can read the full list of approved foods and rules here, but here’s a sneak peek of what the diet entails:

Foods to be avoided:

  • Added sugar – includes natural things like maple syrup and honey.
  • Alcohol*
  • Grains – all of them! You’ll want to check the list.
  • Legumes – sadly include peanut butter.
  • Dairy (Ghee is allowed)
  • Carrageenan, MSG, or sulfites
  • Baked goods, junk foods, or treats with “unapproved” ingredients – it’s not in the diet’s spirit to be indulging in these things.

*If giving up alcohol is too much of a challenge, I’ll still give you credit if you can eliminate ALL other items.

Here’s what an average weekday of meals will look like for me:

  • Breakfast: Veggies roasted or sautéed in olive oil and scrambled eggs
  • Lunch: Diced potatoes (sweet, white sweet, red, Yukon, etc.) and a protein
  • Snack: Apple with almond, pecan, or cashew butter
  • Dinner: Salad + protein – Greens, diced veggies, lean protein, olives, avocado, pumpkin seeds, and a balsamic dressing
  • Occasional “treat”: Date with almond butter (so, so good!)

This is a great way to start the year off right with an easy-to-follow diet that eliminates foods that can be potentially harming your health. If you join The Ford 100, you’ll get regular updates from me regarding your health and nutrition and staying on track with Whole30.

Track your progress for tremendous success

To inspire some competition (whether it’s with yourself or other members), you can accumulate “miles” for workouts, sports, and nutrition. And, to make it fun and easy to get involved, we’ll be offering group bike rides, group walks, speakers from various health professions, and health-related group discussions to keep you on track. Plus, all participants will receive a Ford 100 t-shirt!

Here’s how you can earn points:

  • Each mile of walking, jogging, biking, kayaking, etc. = 1 mile
  • 1 hour workout/sports played = 4 miles
  • Completing the Whole30 diet in January = 25 miles

We hope you’ll join us in The Ford 100 and jump start your health and fitness routine for the New Year!
