A Night to Remember: Centennial Celebration Soirée at The Main House

Published on

One hundred years in the making, the Richmond Hill Historical Society & Museum recently celebrated a momentous Centennial Celebration Soirée, hosted at The Ford Field & River Club’s historic Main House. Set against the backdrop of Henry and Clara Ford’s former winter retreat and the banks of the Ogeechee River, the evening honored the legacy of one of Richmond Hill’s most transformative figures—and celebrated the community spirit that still defines the region today.

The event commemorated Henry and Clara Ford’s first visit to coastal Georgia in April of 1925. What began as a winter home search quickly evolved into something far more impactful. Drawn by the area’s natural beauty and seclusion, the Fords immersed themselves in the daily lives of local residents, listening to their stories, learning their needs and shaping a long-lasting vision rooted in community care.

From building more than 290 structures to supporting cultural, educational and medical initiatives, the Fords’ influence extended well beyond infrastructure. The Soirée celebrated that deeply personal investment—both the physical and intangible ways Ford helped shape Richmond Hill.

Guests gathered at The Main House—listed on the National Register of Historic Places—for a sunset evening filled with live music, champagne toasts, historical estate tours and fundraising opportunities, including an extensive auction and wine pull. The event was made possible with generous support from Salt Cured, the evening’s title sponsor.

During the celebration, Historical Society President Lauren Seaman honored a new generation of local changemakers. Awards were presented to:

  • Matt Gibson of Story Oak Media as Volunteer of the Year
  • Josie Jones as Preservation Pioneer, for her work restoring the Ford Era Clinic
  • Christy Sherman for her exceptional commitment to preserving the region’s rich cultural heritage

The Soirée offered an unforgettable tribute to Henry Ford’s enduring legacy—and to the stewards who continue to honor his vision today.
